Committee Chair Program
Committee chairs are the engine of the PS 889 PA — they turn ideas into programs, rally volunteers, and make sure our school community thrives all year long. It's a meaningful commitment and one of the best ways to shape school life.
What does a committee chair do?
Chairs lead one of the PA's standing committees for the school year. You set the direction, build your team, and work with the executive board to get things done. Most chairs spend a few hours a week, with busier stretches around major events.
Shape PA programs
Drive the agenda for your committee — propose initiatives, set priorities, and see projects through from idea to execution.
Recruit & support members
Build your committee by welcoming volunteers, delegating tasks, and making sure everyone feels useful and included.
Attend monthly PA meetings
Represent your committee at general PA meetings, share updates, and coordinate with the executive board.
Manage the committee budget
Work with the treasurer to request funds, track spending, and report back to the PA on how money was used.
Communicate with the community
Keep families informed about your committee's work through newsletters, social media, and PA announcements.
Collaborate with other chairs
Many PA initiatives span multiple committees. Great chairs build relationships and work across committee lines.
Good to know
- What committees exist? Current PA committees include Communications, Events, Fundraising, RESJ, and Garden, plus bylaw-required Budget and Audit committees. The PA may form additional committees as needs arise.
- How is the chair position filled? Most chairs are elected each spring as part of the executive board election. Positions listed below are ones where we still have openings — anyone who expresses interest is welcome.
- Is it a year-long commitment? Yes — committee chairs typically serve for the full school year, from September through June.
- Do I need prior PA experience? Not at all. We'll connect you with the outgoing chair (if there is one) and the executive board to get you up to speed.
- Can there be more than one chair per committee? Yes — most committees benefit from having 2+ people as co-chairs. Sharing the role makes it more sustainable and brings in different perspectives.
