Class Parent Program
Class parents are the heartbeat of each classroom community — connecting families to each other, to the teacher, and to the PS 889 PA. It's one of the most meaningful ways to get involved.
What does a class parent do?
Class parents serve as the communication link between classroom families and the PA. The role is flexible — you work with your teacher and co-parent(s) to figure out what your class needs. Expect to spend a few hours a month, with a bit more around holidays and events.
Keep families informed
Share PA announcements, upcoming events, and school news with the families in your class.
Organize class celebrations
Coordinate holiday parties, end-of-year events, and other class celebrations with the teacher.
Welcome new families
Reach out to families who join mid-year and help them feel connected to the PS 889 community.
Support teacher appreciation
Organize class contributions for Teacher Appreciation Week and other recognition moments.
Bridge classroom and PA
Attend PA meetings when possible and bring the perspective of your class families to the broader community.
Coordinate volunteers
Help rally class families when the teacher or PA needs extra hands for a specific event or activity.
Good to know
- How many class parents per class? We aim for 1–3 per class so no one person carries the load alone.
- Is it a year-long commitment? Yes — class parents typically serve for the full school year, though we understand life happens.
- Do I need to come into school? Not necessarily. A lot of the work is done via email and group chats. In-person help is always appreciated but rarely required.
- What if I want to be a class parent but the spots are full? Email parents@ps889pa.org — we'll add you to the waitlist.
